Next Session: December 2-February 2

Re-imagining what it means to teach and learn in a century vastly different from centuries before begs new questions to be asked and new solutions to be considered. People from all around the world are asking some really important, tough questions...

  • What does 21st Century look like?

  • What is the teacher's role? The students' role?

  • What exactly is the difference between 20th and 21st Century learning?

  • How do I re-imagine my classroom AND get my students ready for the test?

In our district, we've spent some time considering these questions...however, never before have we come together to collectively jump into these questions and attempt to answer them.

Shifting Definitions of Learning

Describing what this experience is all about and where it will take you is not an easy task because...well, frankly, my intention is for this experience to reflect what I believe real learning is...messy, personal, non-linear, engaging, sweaty and challenging. This is not a traditional "course" in any sense of the word...so if it looks and feels different...then I believe we're on the right track. You'll rarely hear me refer to it as a "course" but rather as an experience. This subtle shift in thinking came about when I read these words during my online travels:

"How would learning be different if we began framing it as an "experience" rather than a "course" or a "lesson" or a "unit"?

Hmmm...I like that. My role as I see it, is to find and create new spaces where learning can happen; help organize and manage those spaces; and provoke and encourage our community to dig deeper. The three years I spent learning alongside Will Richardson and Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach provided me with an opportunity to inhabit those spaces...and were they ever powerful spaces. It was Sheryl who said, "None of us as good as all of us" and so, on this journey, we'll be co-learners in this adventure; making sense of this new world of learning will be up to the collective US.

So what will you be doing? If we do it right, you'll be learning about a range of topics focused on learning in the 21st Century, all of which will hopefully lead you to a better understanding of how learning spaces are changing due to our growing understanding of the brain and how we learn; ubiquitous access to information; and the ability to be not only a consumer of information but a producer with an audience limited only by your imagination. You can learn more about the timeline and content by clicking on the links to the left. It's important to note that all of our learning will take place in both traditional and non-traditional spaces...we will be immersed in what I imagine is meant by 21st Century learning. If you're willing to take a giant leap of faith, I think we might just find our way through the maze. So, hang on tight and let's see where this adventure takes us.
